The Claremont is a family run Guest House which is much closer to Southampton centre and docks than the maps make it appear. There is a nice grassy park close by for relaxing in on a sunny day, in fact there are quite a few similar parks and play areas around the area which are ideal for young children. Five minutes walk away there is a lovely theatre called The Mayflower – we saw “The Jersey Boys” there, and in the same street there is a nice Bistro – lovely food but the prices start at about £12.00. Across the road from there is a great pub with entertainment and food prices in the £7 to £9.00 bracket. So location is good with plenty for everyone.
The Claremont itself can be highly recommended with a great breakfast, friendly service and clean, comfortable beds. I had a front room on the ground floor which was spacious as my photo shows, a single bed and a double bed for my single occupancy! A nice HD 32″ TV but no safe, alarm clock or phone but great for the price. The only negative was that the only clothes hanging rail had just 4 hangers (no prob. for one) and is about 7ft up from the floor! There was 2 – 3 small chests of drawers so again fine for one but come prepared if 2 or 3 are sharing. The other room we had was a double-bed ground floor room to the rear of the property – again brilliantly clean with ample facilities for two.
There is car parking for 4 cars with limited available parking in the street close by. The one thing I have to mention is just how friendly and helpful the father of the house was, when we asked for directions to the port where we had booked a ship’s tour, he actually drove us down there which with all the one way traffic restrictions really was a godsend!
The price of staying here made us pleased with our choice as we wee previously thinking to get a place nearer the cruise terminal and town centre, but if we had then it would have cost us a lot more! OMalley Boy
